RHYTHMIC CHEMISTRY
“PER-muh-niz-uhm: to be like a tree is to be perfectly balanced between three worlds… to be connected to the underworld through the roots, the upper world through branches and leaves… and the middle world through a strong trunk.”
Here, today, connecting earth to sky, roots to branches, breath to (heart)beats… the rhythmic chemistry between spring and summer… more than temperatures and life in bloom… this colorful space for growth within nature’s necessary polarity and versatility… where one ends the other begins—it’s the Gemini twins or Spring’s emergence into Summer's full expression, and these moments between seasons, this middle is where we find ourselves now.
A LIVING INFORMATION LIBRARY
Felt in everything from our own nervous system, heart, and fascia to the vitality and growth of olive trees, grape vines, even shells… witnessing Mother Nature’s efficient patterns for moving energy and creating flow via deep twists, a playful twirl, fluid spirals… along with her influence and approach to nourishment, when you live in and observe nature, it’s here that everything makes sense.
Through this lens, Mother Nature invites us to reexamine our relationship with her, and our “designs” and the “messengers” we weave into a tapestry of her electromagnetic field.
Revealing a deep understanding of this energy and its manifestations in the natural world, Leonardo da Vinci understood centuries ago that the harmonic frequency in an unraveled heart reveals the same spiral pattern found in DNA strands, musical scales, and natural architecture—which inspired his Château de Chambord's double helix staircase design, by the way... but more on this later.
Expanding on his idea of us as electric beings living in a dynamic and interconnected system, submerged in nature, one could easily surmise that we too live in a body.
If we add in what Philip Callahan discovered about Nature’s Secret Force for Growth in Paramagnetism, and courtesy of our chocolate for breakfast coffee dates aka the timing of what we eat when, nature reveals why our relationship with her and the sun matters so much.
Let’s first revisit this timing idea…
SUN-KISSED
With kisses from that golden sphere lingering longer on our lips, from mid-day to afternoon and early evening, through this philosophy of how the sun's continual exchange of new energy enhances and informs what we eat when, during heart (11AM-1PM), small intestines (1PM-3PM), urinary bladder (3PM-5PM) and kidney (5PM to 7PM) time, as the sun reaches peak light and radiation output, we greet the afternoon looking to bushes and animals to stabilize, charge and build.
Of course, being summer, this also means daily discussions surrounding the threat of bloat meets our desires for salt and swimsuits.
However, once we understand timing as vibrational medicine, our quest for the Fountain of Youth evolves from a die-iting mindset to a LIFE-IT of living, fun and a place where salad translates to pizza. It’s true. And shifting our focus away from doing without, this is a place where nutritional narcissism, biohacking trends and supplements for everything need not apply.
SPIRAL PATTERNS
Based on my own results and observations, also, according to Atom Bergstrom, Nicolas Torrent, Dr. John T Richter, and Dr. Randolph Stone, everything on the planet is affected by sunlight, including foods. And, when eaten in their proper growth phase, foods contain their highest bioavailability. Going further, the more variety we eat in smaller quantities, if IN TIME this gives space for nutrients' greatest assimilation.
Adding another layer to one’s quest for vitality, connecting the above idea of time to Callahan's research and the fluid dynamics I mentioned in The Courage of Nature, from the moon vs water, high tide vs low and even how wood and stone connect us to the sun, an interesting cross-pollination or a circumnutation of ideas begins to form... and here is where true health, vitality and that Fountain of Youth come into view.
Now, unraveling certain vines will reveal that even “mathematics has been used to obscure what is obvious in nature.” However, I live by the Mark Twain adage "Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint.” So, keeping this in mind, seeking neither the sun’s daily first kiss nor rooting down to nature’s core, it’s time we discuss pizza… I mean foods that build.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
“Sunlight plus warmth equals metabolic processes moving at top speed.”
Therefore, where water and fire elements build strong connective tissues, for our lunch and mid-day snacks, we look to green leaves and herbs, grasses and magical fruit (beans), vegetables, berries, melons... animal-based cheese, basil, tomatoes... sourdough.
But more than partying at Nature's All You Can Eat Salad Buffet, IN TIME, this is also where pizza, ice cream, (almost) all things cookouts, picnics, and every color you can imagine come to play.
(I’m vegan, but this is also where you’d include animal-based dairy products… chickens, cows, ducks, elk, goats, lambs, pigs, turkey… even ostrich, which means it’s basically any life that walks on land.)
Fun, I know. Also, if you’re into making your own tomato sauce, give this one a try. It’s really easy and really good. It’s also where I learned the necessity of salt and honest friends!
BUTTERFLY MAGIC
With nature leading the way towards our most efficient patterns for moving energy and creating flow, Italian theme continues and we return to our favorite Leo. Sorry, not Toby. Rather, enter Leonardo da Vinci’s observations in the spiral flight and propulsion patterns of flapping wings.
Building on his ideas, along with trees—roots, trunk and branches, translating movement through the principles of Joseph Pilates and his focus on thoracic mobility and muscular force in the saw, with a dash of a criss across and spinal twist, we elevate the “simple” concept of stretching errr cracking ones back.
That is, like so many of his movements, such a simple one, when done correctly, empowers the lift and propulsion of nonsense through engagement and breath, not only making us taller, but also like we’ve just survived figure-eight flight training for our digestive system.
And with the inclusion of our trunk or core, pelvic floor, abductors, armpits, well our full body, if you don’t have any spinal issues or aggravated muscles, these are a torturous but fun way to say hello to your obliques!
-
Begin seated with your legs extended wide, feet flexed, toes pointing up to the ceiling.
NOTE: Sit as tall as possible—reaching the crown of your head upward while rooting your sit bones down. Think of this as pulling your spine apart from both ends.
ANOTHER NOTE: At this point, I like to move my “frosting” out of the way.
Keep your heart lifted, armpits hollowed, palms facing down as you extend your arms out into your peripheral vision.
Push your heels into the floor. Zip up your jeans and take a deep inhale, filling your ribcage with air (think of a balloon).
As you exhale, rotate your spine toward one leg and reach the opposite pinky finger toward that leg’s pinky toe—slicing forward gently. Let the back of your hand spiral as you reach.
While you're reaching your ribcage up and over a giant beach ball, don’t let those jeans pop open.
NOTE: Keep both sit bones anchored. If you’re reaching toward the left, root your right hip into the floor. Repeat on the opposite side.
Inhale to return—spiral back through your trunk, growing tall again before the next exhale and twist.
Repeat 3–5 times on each side, breathing rhythmically. Pause occasionally for a deeper back-rib breath as you’ve lifted up and over that beachball. Also, remember that your jeans are still zipped.
-
From the middle of your mat, lie on your back, knees bent, feet hip-width apart.
NOTE:THIS IS NOT A BRIDGE. The next step helps elongate your spine by removing any air "bubbles" between you and the mat.
Slightly lift your glutes toward your heels and pause. When you lower them, keep your sit bones pulling toward your knees and articulate your spine into the mat.
Now, simultaneously…
A: Pull your knees into your chest while zipping up your jeans (aka engage your core + pelvic floor).
B: Keeping your shoulder blades in your back pockets and your heart open, lift your head, neck, and shoulders from your upper abdominals (just under your bra line). Place your hands—palms flat—where your head meets your neck. Hollow out your armpits.NOTE: Don’t forget—your pinkies and ring fingers want to play, too.
ANOTHER NOTE: Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and relax your jaw—this helps keep tension out of your neck.
ONE MORE NOTE: Keep your chin out of your chest.
Extend your right leg straight out toward the “wall,” hovering it about eye level. Pull your right armpit toward your bent left knee.
Now, twist to the opposite side: shoot your left leg straight out and pull your left armpit toward your bent right knee.
NOTE: Inhale as you return to center; exhale as you twist.
ANOTHER NOTE: Hollow out your abdomen and imprint your spine into the mat. Maintain your c-curve throughout. If your lower back or ribs start to lift, raise your legs a bit higher.
ONE MORE NOTE: If you're pulling your left armpit across, aim to lift your right shoulder blade off the mat while keeping your left hip suction-cupped to the floor. Repeat with the opposite sides. This dials up the spice—so don’t forget to breathe.
Repeat one full cycle (both sides) up to 10 times, but only if you can maintain proper form.
Roll onto one side and press yourself up into a seated position.

Similar to Saw…
With your legs extended, either:
OPTION ONE: extend them straight out, zip up your thighs, and flex your toes toward your nose, or
OPTION TWO cross them and point your toes.Sit tall—crown to ceiling, sit bones rooting down.
Think of your spine being gently pulled from both ends.
NOTE: Again, I like to move my “frosting” out of the way.
Draw your shoulder blades into your back pockets. Extend your arms outward into your peripheral vision, heart lifted, armpits hollowed, palms facing down.
Take a deep inhale and imagine you’re a twisted (or untwisted) vine—lengthening upward as you root down.
EXHALE as you twist to the right, keeping both sit bones—especially the left—anchored.
Jeans zipped, thighs engaged. Repeat on the opposite side.
NOTES:
– If you twist to the right, anchor your left heel and sit bone into the floor.
– Twist to the left, anchor your right heel and sit bone into the floor.
– Keep your heart lifted the entire time. Rooted. Reaching. Building.Repeat 3 sets per side of this wringing out of your spine.
NOTE: It’s harder than it looks—and there is no need to impress anyone.
Keep in mind, whether you’re interested in Pilates or not, no need to stress, but you still gotta move. It’s our human design.
CONSIDERED CURIOSITIES
From pizza to (butterfly) wings, building a foundational core for more mindful consumption and holistic living, considered curiosities by a few brands I’m currently pausing to enjoy or cooling off in… one of Toby’s favorite’s is in here, too!
ELECTRICALLY CHARGED
Embracing Mother Nature’s seasonal assignment, now, not just Rooted and Reaching, through sun-drenched solar exploration, Building harmony with summer's peak mid-day energy, we meet that place where youth is kept flowing…
It's a mindset. Shift in perspective. Evolution of self... one suntan at a time.
